Saying the word fashion (or moda) in the wrong context today, at least to me personally, is just a big no-no for my ever-depleting patience. As I write in English in my Spanish speaking country, I understand that all I’m trying to do is be international. We gotta think big. Mexico City is international, for good and bad reasons, but it is. I feel the FOMO for all my non native speakers who will miss out on the inside jokes (la cura) I’ll be expressing over the next few years, so I guess… just learn Spanish. But I flow better in English, especially when it comes to talking about this matter. There is much to un pack when it comes to “fashion” in Mexico, and slowly we will uncover it all. For now lets start with these.
To utter the words Moda Mexicana, Mexican Fashion Week, or see another inspired design from the mercado, kills me. Or the “classic” move of using the designer’s actual name as the brand’s name is just annoying at this point. Why do ya’ll that?
We have amazing artists, chefs, creatives, true geniuses in my country. But fashion designers? I can count those on one hand, maybe two. (See you in the comments 😈)
We do have talented designers, they’re out there. I’ll find them. I’ve done it before. Truly amazing brands? Its hard but we have a few. A local scene (Mexico City) with true grit for the truth and not just PR bullshit is what we need. I am not here to be friends with anybody, thank you Lester Bangs for teaching me the way.
