September 6th, NYC.

To close our work week after arriving in NYC from San Diego, we booked a reservation at Bar Contra to finally experience a place by Fabian von Hauske Valtierra. Rex had mentioned his name before, saying it was a place we had to try. We took charge.
Now, I’m not a food critic (so I guess stfu, Lui), nor am I a professional when it comes to talking about food. And I’m definitely not a foodie. Over time, though, as Regina and I started to sync, I knew she was right: gastronomy is the playground. At the end of the day, when you’re done with work, and the office closes, you just want to grab a bite and one or two drinks with a particular person or friends.
Started off with some drinks:
Xipe Totec: Smoked Pasilla Spirit, Clairin, Acid Pineapple, Orange Syrup Imagine a spicy pineapple daiquiri.
Better Living: Grapefruit, Cream Syrup, Champagne Acid Like a grapefruit creamsicle
Piscola: Pisco, Averna, Lime Chilean rum and Coke without the rum or Coke
Sly Stone: Bourbon, Symphony and Blenheim Apricots, Peach, Family stone - fruit
Lets eat.
First Plate:
AMERICAN WAGYU BEEF TARTARE Ramp, artichoke.
Second Plate:
TUNA MAYO potato crisp, raw shaved onions +
CELERIAC CRUMPET wakame butter.
Third Plate:
MAINE SCALLOP masa battered with shiso and walnut condiment
Fourth Plate:
MONTAUK scarlet prawn.
Fifth Plate:
MUSHROOM TARTLET scallop mousse, black truffle.
Sixth Plate:
CHICKEN WING served boneless, stuffed with stilton and pork sausage.
Dessert:
POTATO & STRAWBERRY SUNDAE roasted potato ice cream, whipped strawberry, brown butter sabayon.
Much to learn if I’m going to be giving places ratings, but I can only confirm if it was worth it or not.
Bar Contra, worth it.
Thank you, Chef Fabian, who came out at the end to make us feel like VIPs, and to the whole team who served us that night. It was a marvelous close to our week. We had to order the dessert twice because it was just too good.
This week:
Good, tasteful, & real.
Good:
Pilgrim Surf Supply Store, in Brooklyn
Tasteful:
Real:
These past two weeks, with all the changes, have felt intense but productive. Who knows what happened at a universal level, but I can say I’m excited to start next week with October. It took a little longer to get this post out from our time in NYC, but I know I’ll be better and faster at posting. I hope you enjoy the photos, which I believe make the plates speak for themselves, and I added some extra video content from our quick visit to Pilgrim Surf Supply—just a random choice while walking in Brooklyn.
Have a good night,
Monday Office opening at 8 AM, tomorrow.
